For K-8 schools, we look at the percent of their students that are proficient in math & reading on the MCA as well as the percent of their students who are growing academically in math and reading according to the MCA. For high schools, we look at the percent of students graduating and completing their 2nd year of college as well as a high school’s average ACT score. Each of the 3 most recent years of this data* is compared to a beginning average for Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) and the state. MPS and the state beginning averages are an average of data from 2015-2017, when we began calculating an academic rating. Holding the MPS and state averages the same over time allows us to see improvement more clearly.
K-8 Schools:
HIGH PERFORMING schools have a higher percentage of students who are on grade-level or making academic progress than the state average, 2 of the last 3 years.
HIGH POTENTIAL schools have a higher percentage of students who are on grade-level or making academic progress than the Minneapolis Public Schools average, 2 of the last 3 years.
MID PERFORMING schools have a lower percentage of students who are on grade level or making academic progress than the Minneapolis Public Schools average but are not in the bottom 25% of schools for percent of students on grade-level OR making academic progress, 2 of the last 3 years,
LOW PERFORMING schools are in the bottom 25% of schools in the city for percent of students on grade-level OR making academic progress, 2 of the last 3 years,
PERSISTENTLY LOW PERFORMING schools are in the bottom 25% of schools in the city for percent of students on grade-level & making academic progress, 2 of the last 3 years,
NEW SCHOOL schools do not have enough years of data to receive a rating.

HIGH POTENTIAL high schools have a higher percentage of students who persisted through their 2nd year of post-secondary schooling (college) than the Minneapolis Public Schools average, OR their average ACT score was 18 or above, 2 of the last 3 years.
MID PERFORMING high schools have a lower percentage of students who persisted through their 2nd year of post-secondary schooling (college) than the Minneapolis Public Schools average but are not in the bottom 25% of schools, OR their average ACT score is above 15, 2 of the last 3 years.
LOW PERFORMING schools are in the bottom 25% of schools in the city in percentage of students who persisted through their 2nd year of post-secondary schooling (college), 2 of the last 3 years OR their average ACT score is below 15, 2 of the last 3 years.

Academic ratings for K-8 schools are informed by 3 years of MCA data, &, for high schools, a combination of ACT scores & college persistence.
